The 22nd International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy Kicks Off in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, July 18, 2025: The 22nd International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy officially commenced today in Addis Ababa, drawing economists, policymakers, researchers, and development experts from across Ethiopia and the globe. Hosted by the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA), the conference provides a critical platform for discussing Ethiopia’s ongoing macroeconomic reforms, economic stability, and their social welfare implications.

The event began with a presidential address by Professor Tassew Woldehanna, President of the Ethiopian Economics Association, who emphasized the importance of evidence-based policymaking in steering Ethiopia towards sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Professor Tassew highlighted the conference’s role in fostering robust dialogue and generating actionable insights for policymakers.

Following this, H.E. Dr. Eyob Tekalign Tolina, State Minister of Fiscal Policy and Public Finance, delivered the opening statement, underscoring the government’s commitment to economic reform and fiscal responsibility. Dr. Eyob emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among government, academia, and the private sector to address the complex challenges facing Ethiopia’s economy.

The conference’s theme, “Macroeconomic Reform, Economic Stability, and Implications for Social Welfare,” reflects Ethiopia’s current focus on balancing rapid economic transformation with social equity. Over the next two days, participants will examine the design and impact of key reforms, explore risks to economic stability such as inflation and debt management, and analyze the effects of policies on poverty, employment, and access to services.

In his remarks, Professor Mengistu Ketema, CEO of the EEA, expressed optimism about the conference’s potential to influence policy through rigorous research and multi-sectoral collaboration. “This forum is a unique opportunity to share knowledge, debate challenges, and advance solutions that benefit all Ethiopians,” he said.

With a full agenda of plenary sessions, panel discussions, and thematic parallel tracks, the conference promises to deliver fresh perspectives on Ethiopia’s economic journey amid a dynamic global environment.

The opening day set a strong tone for constructive discussions, starting with a focus on labor policies and minimum wage reforms, followed by fiscal updates and specialized sessions on trade, gender, agriculture, and economic governance.
